The fort is closely linked to the royal Al Nahyan family; it served as the seat of power for Sheikh Zayed The First who ruled the emirate of Abu Dhabi for 54 years (1855-1909). It was built both as a symbol of power and royal summer residence. Today, it serves as a cultural center, housing exhibitions that showcase the history and heritage of Al Ain. Don’t miss the permanent exhibition space devoted to famous explorer and photographer Wilfred Thesiger.
