Personally, I love hiking in Hatta. There are so many trails to explore, each offering its own unique experience. The most popular route leads to the iconic Hatta sign, perched high on the mountainside. The views from the top are absolutely worth the climb, trust me! No matter which trail you choose, you’ll find that Hatta’s rugged landscape offers a rewarding challenge for hikers of all levels. You’ll pass through landscapes dotted with wildflowers in the cooler months, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot some local wildlife. As of August 2024, the Dubai municipality has opened a total of 86 kilometers of mountain trails featuring 21 cycling routes spanning 53 km, 17 walking trails across 33 km, 9 wooden bridges and 14 rest stops and service facilities. This means that there is now even more reason to explore Hatta and the environs!
A Glimpse into Hatta’s History
Hatta, historically known as Hajarain, has a rich past that adds depth to its charm. Formerly part of Oman, the town was given to Dubai around 1850 when the Omanis found themselves unable to defend it against the Na’im tribe of Buraimi, who had already settled in nearby Masfout (which today is part of Ajman). During the reign of Hasher Bin Maktoum, the Omani Sultan Turki bin Said officially transferred Hatta to Dubai to better secure the region. Interestingly, the village was still referred to as Hajarain as recently as 1906.
Today, Hatta is home to a population of around 13,000 people, many of whom live in harmony with the rugged landscape, maintaining traditions and preserving the cultural heritage of the area.

The museum building and the views from the museum are pretty incredible too! Masfout is actually a part of the Ajman emirate so by visiting this region you will end up exploring the history of both the Dubai and Ajman emirates!
For those who are seeking history beyond the museums: there’s an exciting new attraction: a guided tour inside the ancient Falaj system originally dating back to the Iron Age (1000 BCE). These ingenious irrigation channels supported vital agriculture in the region, helping to grow crops like palms, wheat, figs, millet, lemon, and mango. There is an oasis right in the middle of the village to prove just how fertile this land has been through generations.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the falaj system is how water was distributed equally among farmers. The timing for watering could be day or night, with allocations calculated by the stars at night or shadows during the day. This ensured every farmer received their fair share of water, a system that allowed these communities to thrive in an otherwise arid environment. Some parts of the falaj run underground, and with the guided tour, you can even explore these hidden tunnels. It’s completely safe and makes for an intriguing adventure that the whole family can enjoy.
