Step 1: Gear Up

The right gear can make or break your hiking experience. Here’s what you’ll need:

Essentials:

– Shoes: Invest in sturdy hiking shoes with good grip.

– Backpack: Choose a lightweight, comfortable backpack to carry your supplies.

– Water & Food:Hydration is key! Bring at least 2-3 liters of water and healthy snacks like nuts, fruits, or even a Subway sandwich for a satisfying treat.

– Navigation Tools: Use apps like Wikiloc to plan and follow trails. Always carry a power bank to keep your devices charged.  Download the Wikiloc trail in advance to your smartphone in case there is no internet service in the area.

– Emergency Kit: Include antiseptic gel, band-aids, and basic first-aid supplies.

Comfort Items:

– Sweat towel, hand cream, and sunblock.

– A hat, spare shirt, and sports clothes made of technical material for comfort.

– A hoodie for cooler temperatures, especially if you’re hiking at sunrise or sunset.

Extras:

– Hiking poles for stability.

– Headlamps or flashlights if there’s a chance you’ll be out after dark.

Step 2: Plan Your Hike

Research Your Trail

Before heading out, explore blogs or use Wikiloc to learn about the trail’s difficulty level, duration, and terrain. This preparation will help you pick a route suitable for your fitness level.

Timing Matters

Avoid hiking during the midday heat. Sunrise and sunset hikes are ideal for cooler weather and breathtaking views.

Inform Someone

Always let a friend or family member know where you’re going and your estimated return time.

Step 3: Stay Safe

Emergency Prep

– Save the local emergency number (999 in the UAE) on your phone.

– Download relevant apps like the UAE’s emergency services app for added security.

Weather Check

The UAE is prone to flash floods in some areas. Avoid hiking if there’s rain in the forecast, as wadis can quickly become dangerous.

Wildlife Awareness

While encounters with snakes or scorpions are rare, they do happen. Watch your step and avoid placing your hands on rocks or in holes.

– Snakes: Most will slither away, but if bitten, try to identify the snake (especially if it’s a viper) and seek immediate medical help.

– Scorpions: Stay away; they are venomous and can sting if provoked.

Trail Etiquette

– Stick to marked trails to avoid getting lost.

– Always respect nature by not littering or disturbing wildlife.

– Avoid taking anything from nature. Let a beautiful flower or a plant bring you joy just by observing, not taking it with you.

Step 4: Enjoy Responsibly

What to Pack for Energy

– Snacks: Healthy options like nuts, granola bars, or fruits.

– Drinks: Coconut water is a refreshing option for hydration.

Stay Aware

– Look out for uneven terrain, especially holes that can trip you up.

– If you feel fatigued or the trail gets too challenging, remember it’s okay to turn back.

Step 5: Build Knowledge

Consider getting a copy of the *Emirates Field Guide* to learn more about the UAE’s flora and fauna. It’s a great way to deepen your connection to the environment you’re exploring.
